Green light for Civic and Cultural Quarter

8 Dec 2009  -  It’s green for go for Doncaster’s Civic and Cultural Quarter after the Yorkshire Forward Board agreed  to fund two separate projects within the major town centre redevelopment programme.

Yorkshire Forward has approved £7.5m for a project to improve the Civic and Cultural Quarter site, which will create the right environment to encourage private sector investment.  A separate project to deliver a new £22.5m performance venue will receive £9.1m of funding from Yorkshire Forward.

Doncaster Council's cabinet member for business and regeneration, Councillor Jonathan Wood, said: “Outline planning has been granted, site preparation work is almost complete and with funding arrangements in place we can now look forward to this £300m transformational programme becoming reality.

“The project will deliver real economic benefits for Doncaster and shows that, despite the recession, the private sector has tremendous confidence in the town’s potential.”

Dave Custance, assistant director of environment at Yorkshire Forward, said: “In principle the Yorkshire Forward Board has approved £16.6m, subject to funding agreement. This investment in Doncaster’s Civic and Cultural Quarter will act as a catalyst for future private sector developments in the town and the new performance venue will provide a much needed facility.”

Dan Needham, regional director for Muse Developments, commented: “We welcome the strong support from Yorkshire Forward in progressing the CCQ scheme. The case for regenerating the Waterdale area was overwhelming.  This is complete area regeneration and will introduce attractive, highly energy efficient buildings as well as new infrastructure to improve connectivity with surrounding neighbourhoods.”

The CCQ project is supported financially by both central government and the European Union, through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme.

The redevelopment of the 25 acre brownfield site on the south side of Doncaster’s town centre will take about eight years to complete.  This makeover will deliver first class facilities and attractions turning the area into a destination of choice for investors, businesses and residents.
